Serena William's outburst!

Hi,

After the outburst at the U.S. Open on Sep. 12, when Serena Williams threatened to shove a tennis ball down a line judge’s throat, many thought that she would lose her 3 big sponsors. But William apologized and her 3 sponsors, Nike, Kraft Foods, and Tampax, supported her.

One of her new sponsors, Tampax, a tampon brand, said that “We didn’t ever consider dropping Serena.""She accepted responsibility and apologized for what happened, and we think that demonstrates the strength of her character.”

Tampax also believes that it would help their ads for their brand because of the outburst. They say that it shows "feminine PMSing", which could help their advertisements.

Lucky for Williams that she didn't lose any of her sponsors.

  1. Anger worked for John McEnroe, maybe it will work for Serena too.

  2. How Serena acted is absolutely uncalled for. I think that it is up-surd that her sponsors did not drop her, and for them to think that the controversy might help them is very sad. It is probably true though, most people are attracted to controversy and celebrities. It seems as if celebrities can do anything and get away with it. Most of the time when celebrities do something wrong it always works in there favor.

  3. Okay, this outburst was uncalled for, but of course it is way bigger of a deal because she is a women. I can remember countless times that a male athlete had an outburst or worse a physical fight and it was not considered a big deal. Second, the whole pms aspect of tampaxs ads is offensive. I am a firm believer in controlling your emotions and really don't think an ad should try to make money off of such an issue.

  4. It was obviously uncalled for, but she is only human. Sometimes our emotions get the best of us, even if we know that we are in the public spotlight. As far as Tampax using this to their advantage, I highly doubt that they will take it any further. On the other hand it does show empathy for women who have emotional problems during that time of the month. It is harmless in my opinion.
